Jingle bells... not until December!

The festive season is upon us once again.

The Lodger was banned from talking about Christmas until December 1st and it was purely selfish on our part in saving our sanity.  What we didn't expect was that The Lodger would take this new rule to the extreme.

If we were out and about in November, we would inevitably stumble across Christmas themed decorations. I don't think many children would stand there pointing at them and shaking their heads saying "O no, take it down. It's too early. Mum close your eyes. You'll be so cross if you see it!"

When Santa's grotto appeared in the local shopping centre, he was on his way to talk to the security man to tell him to remove it. If there were fines to be handed out for premature Christmas decorations, The Lodger would have made a fortune!!

It was like walking around with a mini Grinch. Though, in all honesty, a mini Grinch who 100% loves Christmas.

Letter to Santa

The 1st December could not come fast enough.

"How many days are left?"
"Are we in the new month now?"

We'd wake up to the sounds of his sweet voice singing "Jingle bells, jingle bells all the way to Christmas!" However, little did we know, poor Walter would quickly be given out to.
"Walter, do not sing Christmas songs! It is not time yet!"

He'd catch us mentioning Christmas and we'd be in trouble,
"Mum, no sticker for you!"

He checked the calendar "O no, no new picture yet."

Finally, "Mum, it is here! Now, is it Christmas tomorrow???"

I thank the creator of the advent calendar. This year the Lodger has a wooden train one to open. However, being the thinker that he is, he did ask,

"Mum, if I open all the doors today, will it be Christmas tomorrow?"

He's starting to think cleverly about many topics now.  Over the summer, his cousin lost her tooth, so there was great excitement about the tooth fairy. The Lodger, of course, had many questions about it.

Before going to sleep one night, he called me as I was walking down the stairs.
"Mum, come quick!"

I rushed back up... in a panic!

"Everything ok?" I asked.

"Look, Mum, I have a wobbly hand. The tooth fairy needs to come tonight!" he exclaimed as he shook and wobbled his hand in front of me.

You've got to give it to him. It's a clever way of thinking.

The Lodger was asked to clean up his toys and quick as a flash he replied: "Sorry I can't, my hand is on holidays!"

Inwardly, I applaud my son for his quick thinking. I really didn't believe he would ever be so witty and funny.

PWS can make you think that things will be a certain way, that there won't be a wonderful personality but that couldn't be more wrong. The Lodger as always continues to surprise us. As the saying goes, he may have PWS but it is definitely not him!

One of his very first therapists asked us what did we want for him in the future? When your little baby is 6 months old, it's a question that stumps you.

She smiled and suggested
"You want him to meet his maximum potential in every aspect of life!"

It's an answer that still rings true today!
Jingle the elf!

Turn around and go home.

Prader-Willi Syndrome. It raises its head when you least expect it. Although in hindsight it was totally going to appear because we did everything we weren't supposed to.  The Lodger and Little Bro walk in the woods (not today!) I'll set the scene. It's a lovely autumnal Sunday. The sun is shining, it's not raining and it's not cold. A walk would be just the ticket before The Lodger has his Sunday movie. As you know, routine is important. Movies can't be missed.  We decided on our route- the route we call the castle route. You guessed incorrectly, it doesn't feature a castle but if you go off path and really crane your neck you might just glimpse one.  However when we got to the woods, I switched the route up. I don't know why. I just did. A moment of spontaneity. Anyway Hindsight. Lesson learned.  The new route meant a bit of climbing, so a lot of helping The Lodger and for The Lodger he wasn't able to continue his telling of the story he paused las

Steak is my favourite animal.

By Rory The Lodger loves cows. They are his favourite animal. They are also his baby brothers favourite animal because the Lodger decided they are.  Cow watching! The Lodgers birthday was recently. A huge day in his and our life. 10 years into our journey of discovery and all the other things Prader-Willi Syndrome throws at you. He wanted the perfect birthday. Don't we all on our birthday. Unfortunately the Lodgers idea of the perfect day for our birthdays doesn't always live up to his high standards. Or what you'd actually like to do on your birthday. And this can lead to unhappiness with the plan.  Things have to happen certain ways. And sometimes for example if I had a glass of orange juice for my last birthday breakfast I obviously have to have one this year. And probably, every year. Routine is important. We created that monster ourselves. This year my birthday was surrounded by much sobbing and stress as when the cake didn't work first time (and I was OK with it,

Hunting Nuns

By Rory Today we went hunting nuns. It a past-time I hadn't expected to be partaking in when I woke up this morning but that's what was decided we would do so we did it. I should explain.  The Lodger loves witches. His favourite witch is the Grand High Witch.  While some years ago we worked through the logic that the Grand High Witch was not real we discussed actors.  Now obviously, his favourite actor is Angelica Huston.  She lives in America so we learnt everything about her.  We learnt she went to school in Ireland  In Kylemore Abbey.  We now visit Kylemore Abbey. Alot. The Lodger likes the house which was then the school.  He likes the bus to see the Connemara ponies and the Kune Kune pigs. I like the gardens.  We now go there to hunt nuns.  Unfortunately today we didn't catch any nuns but we did do some research. We investigated every picture of the nuns. We read all about the nuns. We looked in odd places in case a nun might be there. But there were none to catch. We
